| Since 1974 MICHAEL O'BRIEN has published over 1,000 books at The O’Brien Press. He is a past President of CLÉ, a founder member of the Irish Children’s Book Trust and CBI, and was the first president of IBBY Ireland. In 2006 he was given the Award of the Decade by CBI. SIOBHÁN PARKINSON is a writer for children and teenagers, as well as a translator, editor and teacher of fiction writing. Her most recent books are The Henny Penny Tree (O'Brien Press 2008) and Dialann Sár-Runda Amy Ní Chonchúir (Cois Life 2008). MAGS WALSH is Director of Children’s Books Ireland (CBI), the national advocacy and resource organisation. She is a regular contributor to Inis Magazine, and on Newstalk 106. She also maintains a children’s book blog, Very Hungry Caterpillar. SARAH BANNAN is Head of Literature with the Arts Council. Sarah studied literature and literary criticism at Georgetown University and moved to Ireland in 1998, when she began work with the Lilliput Press. She joined the staff of the Arts Council in 2000, initially in the area of literature and later as Local Arts Development Manager. Sarah also worked at the Irish Film Institute as Head of Education and Access, before returning to the Arts Council as Head of Literature at the end of 2007. Poet and publisher SEAMUS CASHMAN founded Wolfhound Press in 1974. His most recent collection is That Morning Will Come: New & Selected Poems (Salmon, 2007). He compiled and edited Irish Poems for Young People (with Bridie Quinn, 1975 & still in print) and the award winning Something Beginning with P: New Poems from Irish Poets (O’Brien Press, 2004). |

| The O’Brien Press and Children’s Books Ireland celebrate a special edition of the classic children’s book The Great Pig Escape by LINDA MOLLER, with the cover specially designed by Holly Crowley Walsh (13) from Ballinhassig, Co Cork who won first prize in the Children’s Book Festival ‘Design A Cover’ competition. Joe O’Brien will launch the book and present certificates to the winners and runners-up. | |||

| Update 2 March 2009 - the Poetry Workshop with Medbh McGuckian is now full. 10 places are available, free of charge, to participate in a workshop with one of Ireland’s best known poets. Please submit an application to bookings@dublinbookfestival.com with a paragraph describing your background in poetry and your successes to date, along with a sample of 5 poems. Selected participants will have some of these poems workshopped at the event. |

SAMANTHA HOLMAN has been CEO of the Irish Copyright Licensing Agency (ICLA) since 2001. ICLA represents authors’ and publishers’ rights particularly in relation to reprography. She is also on two national voluntary boards, the Copyright Association of Ireland and the Irish Visual Artists’ Rights Organisation. |

| Born in Dublin in 1959, DERMOT BOLGER founded Raven Arts Press when still a teenager. He is the author of eight volumes of poetry, including External Affairs (New Island, 2008). He edited the Night & Day: Twenty Four Hours in the Life of Dublin anthology in 2008.
CAROLINE LYNCH's first collection Lost in the Gaeltacht was published in 2008 by Salmon Poetry. In 2007 she won the Listowel Writers’ Week poetry collection competition. She obtained an MA in Writing from NUIG in 2007. GERRY MURPHY was born in Cork in 1952. Dedalus Press have published Rio de la Plata and all that (1993), The Empty Quarter(1996), Extracts from the Lost Log Book of Christopher Columbus(1999), Torso Of An Ex-Girlfriend (2002), and End of Part One: New & Selected Poems (2006). |

| JACK HARTE has published three collections of short stories, Murphy in the Underworld (Glendale Press 1986), Birds and other Tails (Dedalus, 1996) and From Under Gogol’s Nose (Scotus, 2004). His novels, In the wake of the Bagger and, Reflections in a Tar-Barrel are published by Scotus Press. As an arts activist in the 1980s he founded both the Irish Writers’ Union and the Irish Writers’ Centre CAROLINE WILLIAMS is a writer, editor and has worked in the arts in various capacities over the last couple of decades. She was publications editor and Special Events Co-ordinator for the 2008 Dublin Theatre Festival. Her novel Pretending was published by Penguin Ireland in 2006. . |

| PATRICIA BURKE BROGAN is a painter, poet and playwright. Salmon published Above the Waves Calligraphy, Stained Glass at Samhain and the multi-award-winning Eclipsed. Her latest collection is Decollage: New and Selected Poems (Wordsonthestreet, 2008) who have also published Requiem of Love: A Monologue for Stage and a new edition of Eclipsed. JOHN MCGUCKIAN was born in Ballymena, Co. Antrim. His books include The MacGildowney Marine Band (Lapwing, 1992), Talking with My Brother (Summer Palace Press, 2002) and Star and Sparrow Rest (Summer Palace Press, 2008). He has received bursaries from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and in 2005 completed an MA in Creative Writing at QUB. LIZ O'DONOGHUE was born in 1960 in North Cork and educated at UCC where she ran the Poetry Workshop. Her chapbook is Waitress at the Banquet (Three Spires Press, 1995) and her debut collection Train to Gorey was published by Arlen House in 2008. JOHN WAKEMAN has published two books of poetry, most recently A Sea Family: New and Selected Poems (Bradshaw Books, 2005). In 1999 he founded The SHOp: A Magazine of Poetry, which he now co-edits with his wife Hilary. He has also published short stories, essays and reviews. |

| President of Sinn Féin and Westminster MP for West Belfast, GERRY ADAMS has published many books with Brandon since 1982 which have won critical acclaim and have been widely translated. His writings range from local history and reminiscence to politics and short stories, and they include the fullest and most authoritative exposition of modern Irish republicanism. MICHAEL D. HIGGINS has served in the Dáil for more than twenty years including as Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht and is currently Labour Party spokesman on foreign affairs. He has campaigned for human rights for many years, and is also a poet, author and broadcaster. CONOR KOSTICK teaches medieval history at Trinity College Dublin. He is co-author, with Lorcan Collins, of The Easter Rising -- A Guide to Dublin in 1916. A new edition of his Revolution in Ireland 1917-1923 will be published this year by Cork University Press. RISTEÁRD MULCAHY is a well-known public figure, health commentator and campaigner. His previous two books with Liberties Press are Improving with Age and Is the Health Service for Healing? He is the second son of Richard Mulcahy who played a leading role in the military and political evolution of the state from 1916. |

| JENNIFER JOHNSTON was born in Dublin in 1930. Her novels are internationally acclaimed, she has been shortlisted for the Booker Prize, and won the Whitbread Award. Her plays include Desert Lullaby (Lagan Press) and Selected Short Plays (New Island). She lives in Derry. LELIA DOOLAN has worked as an actor, singer, teacher, community activist, RTE director, Artistic Director of the Abbey Theatre, and Chair of the Irish Film Board. | CAROLINE MADDEN is co-author of The Money Book and co-editor with Laura Slattery of a forthcoming Blackhall book on how to survive the recession in style. She is a freelance journalist, writing mainly for the business pages of The Irish Times. PAUL OVERY is a prolific writer on the subject of wealth accumulation, with articles published in all of Ireland’s major newspapers. He has been a regular contributor to The Investor, Medicine Weekly and IPU Review. His first book is The Tricks of the Rich (Oak Tree Press, 2006). LAURA SLATTERY is the co-author with Caroline Madden of The Money Book: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Your Finances (But Were Afraid to Ask) published by Blackhall Publishing. She is a staff journalist for the Irish Times, writing mainly for the newspaper’s business desk. |

Phil program in Creative Writing at TCD and is currently working on a collection of poems and a collection of short stories. MICHAEL HALLORAN was born in New Jersey in 1985. A graduate of NUI Maynooth, he is currently taking the MA in Writing at NUIG. His main focus is non-fiction writing and poetry. HELENA NOLAN is a poet and short story writer. | PAT BORAN has worked as a radio broadcaster, literature festival organiser and, more recently, as editor of the Dedalus Press. He has published collections of poetry, with his latest being New and Selected Poems (Salt Publishing, 2005; Dedalus Press, 2007). He received the 2008 Lawrence O’Shaughnessy Award for Irish Poetry and is a member of Aosdána. THEO DORGAN has published three poetry collections, the first two of which, The Ordinary House of Love (Salmon, 1991) and Rosa Mundi (Salmon, 1995) were reissued in a single volume, What This Earth Cost Us (Dedalus Press, 2008). His non-fiction work includes Sailing for Home (Penguin Ireland, 2004). PAUL PERRY was born in Dublin in 1972. His debut poetry collection The Drowning of the Saints was published by Salmon in 2003, his second The Orchid Keeper came from Dedalus Press in 2006. | JEAN HARRINGTON is the Managing Director of Maverick House Publishers, an independent publishing house which publishes in Ireland, the UK and Asia. She is also the best-selling author of books such as Survivor and The Irish Ballerina and has recently written The Mission. PATSY HORTON is Managing Editor with Blackstaff Press. She has published widely on Scottish and Irish Writing. Author, publisher and campaigner for freedom of expression, STEVE MCDONOGH set up Brandon in 1982. His memoir of his publishing life, Open Book: One Publisher’s War, was published in 1999. He is the author of books of photography, poetry, folklore, topography and autobiography. Since 1974 MICHAEL O'BRIEN has published over 1000 books at The O’Brien Press. He is a past President of CLÉ, a founder member of the Irish Children’s Book Trust and CBI, and was the first president of IBBY Ireland. In 2006 he was given the Award of the Decade by CBI. |

| In 1970, at the age of eighteen, PETER FALLON founded The Gallery Press, Ireland’s leading literary publishing company. His collections include News of the World: Selected and New Poems (1998), The Georgics of Virgil (2004) and The Company of Horses (2007). He was the inaugural Heimbold Professor of Irish Studies at Villanova University, and is a member of Aosdana. LORNA SHAUGHNESSY‘s debut poetry collection Torching the Brown River was published by Salmon in 2008. In 2006 she published translations of contemporary Mexican poetry with Arlen House, Mother Tongue by Pura López Colomé and If We Have Lost our Oldest Tales by María Baranda. | Dublin City is applying for designation as a UNESCO City of Literature which will create synergies between members in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network and encourage cultural diversity. Deirdre Ellis-King and Jane Alger have led the initiative and invited Alan Hayes (CLÉ), Sarah Bannan (Arts Council) and Joseph Woods (Poetry Ireland) to work on the management committee. Deirdre, Jane and writer Eibhlín Evans will give a presentation on the Dublin City application. DEIRDE ELLIS-KING is Dublin City Librarian. She directs the International Impac Dublin Literary Award and represents the City Council on Euro-Cities Cultural Committee. Currently the President of The Library Association of Ireland and Chair of the James Joyce Centre she is also a member of the steering group planning an Irish Museum of Literature. JANE ALGER is a Divisional Librarian with Dublin City Libraries working to promote reading and the reading experience in Dublin. She is the main contact person for the Dublin City application to UNESCO for City of Literature designation. She has nurtured the growth of book clubs in Dublin City Libraries and the first Readers’ Day in Ireland was started by Jane in Dublin in 2002. With Dublin City Libraries DR EIBHLÍN EVANS gives talks, lectures and interviews on literary subjects, she has participated in the Dublin One City One Book initiative and was a member of the judging panel for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. |

| KEVIN CASEY is a novelist, short fiction writer and playwright. Born in England to Irish parents, MARION URCH is a novelist and short fiction writer with credits for film, radio and television. Her first novel Violent Shadows was published in 1996 and her new novel An Invitation to Dance (Brandon, 2009) is based on the life of Lola Montez. |

| RUTH CARR was born and lives in Belfast where she works in community education. She edited the groundbreaking The Female Line in 1985. Her poetry collections are There is a House (Summer Palace Press, 1999) and The Airing Cupboard (Summer Palace Press, 2008). PETER SIRR is a freelance writer, editor and translator. He has published seven collections with Gallery Press, including The Ledger of Fruitful Exchange (1995), Bring Everything (2000), Nonetheless (2004) and Selected Poems (2004). A new collection, The Thing Is, will be published in 2009. VINCENT WOODS, poet, playwright and broadcaster, presents The Arts Show on RTE Radio One. He has published two poetry collections, The Colour of Language (Dedalus, 1994) and Lives and Miracles (Arlen House, 2002) and is currently working on his third collection. |

| LELAND BARDWELL as born in India. She is a co-editor of the long-running literary magazine, Cyphers. MACDARA WOODS was born in Dublin in 1942. Since the 1960s he has published sixteen books. His most recent poetry collection is Artichoke Wine (Dedalus, 2006), and he co-edited the anthology Present Tense: Words and Pictures (Mayo Co Council, 2006). He joined RTE in 1990, became the station’s first Washington correspondent in 1995 and has covered four US presidential election campaigns. With New Island he has published Turn Left at Greenland, Zulu Time and The New America. NIALL STANAGE has covered American politics since 2003. He writes for The Sunday Business Post and has broadcast on the Tubridy Show, Drivetime and the Late Debate amongst others. She is currently writing a memoir-style novel based on her own life experiences in Lebanon and Ireland. Born in 1983, NIAMH FLEMING-FARRELL grew up in Co. Laois. She has worked as an editorial assistant at Public Affairs Ireland and is currently enrolled on the MA in Writing at NUIG. She works part-time at Dubray Books. SEAN MONAGHAN’s earlier novels Plus Ultra and Planned Accidents were published by Poolbeg Press. He is currently completing his Masters in Creative Writing at TCD and finishing his next novel, The Suddenness of Everything. |

She has had numerous day jobs, including university lecturer, aerobics instructor, freelance journalist and, most recently literary agent and writing mentor. RONAN O'BRIEN was born in Dublin in 1974 and works as a solicitor specialising in the area of criminal law. His debut novel Confessions of a Fallen Angel is published by Hachette Books Ireland and he is now working on his second novel. |

GERARD SMYTH’s poetry has been published widely in literary journals in Ireland, Britain and the United States since the late 1960s, as well as in translation. He has published six collections, including Daytime Sleeper (Dedalus Press, 2002), A New Tenancy (Dedalus Press, 2004) and The Mirror Tent (Dedalus Press, 2007). Telling it Our Way: Essays in Gender History is forthcoming from Arlen House. ROSEMARY CULLEN OWENS lectured on Irish Women’s History from 1990-2008 in WERRC, UCD. Her books include A Social History of Women in Ireland (Gill & Macmillan), Louie Bennett: A Biography (Cork University Press) and Smashing Times (Attic Press). SINÉAD MCCOOLE is a well-known historian and the author of a number of books on women and history. She currently works as a historical and picture researcher, and an exhibition curator. No Ordinary Women was recently reissued by The O’Brien Press. MARGARET Ó hÓGARTAIGH lectures in history at UL. | Written Off? is an RTE documentary series, in association with NALA, the National Adult Literacy Agency, following the progress of eight people with low literacy levels as they take part in a potentially life-changing programme. Many of the participants started the course unable to read a newspaper headline, or write a shopping list but after six weekends they have compiled a book, published by New Island in the Open Door series, from which they will read. The students will be awarded FETAC certificates for having completed the course and will be joined by special guests. | |||
