Jane Alger is a Divisional Librarian with Dublin City Libraries. Having been the chief stock buyer for some years her current brief is to promote reading and the reading experience in Dublin. She is the main contact person for the Dublin City application to UNESCO for City of Literature designation and was instrumental in Dublin's previous applications to UNESCO for World Book Capital status. She has nurtured the growth of book clubs in Dublin City Libraries with the result that the branch libraries network currently supports 112 clubs. The first Readers' Day in Ireland was started by Jane in Dublin in 2002. Internationally renowned authors such as Salman Rushdie, Sebastian Barry, Joanne Harris, Michael Scott, Salley Vickers, Joseph O'Connor, and many more have attended what is now an essential event in the lives of Dublin book club members. The multi-award winning Dublin: One City One Book, the annual celebration of a book with Dublin connections, was started by Jane in 2006 and goes from strength to strength with Dracula being the featured book next month.
