Historical figures will be brought to life during this lively discussion analysing two of Ireland’s most influential characters. This meeting of minds includes Joseph E. A. Connell Jnr, author of Dublin Rising 1916 and Who’s who in the Dublin Rising 1916, both published in 2016 by Wordwell Books. He writes a regular column in History Ireland and is a contributor to Newstalk’s Talking History programme. Joseph’s latest book Michael Collins’s Dublin (Wordwell Books) is the story of Collins’s time in Dublin and reflects Irish nationalism and separatism from 1916 until 1922. Collins’s footprint was on every street, laneway and alley of Dublin, but especially of Dublin 1. Joseph will be joined by historian and broadcaster David McCullagh, who delves deep into the legacy of one of Ireland’s most influential figures of the twentieth century in his new book DeValera Volume I: Rise (1882–1932) (Gill Books). DeValera was a leader of the Easter Rising, the figurehead of the anti-Treaty rebels during the dark days of the Civil War and later, as the founder of Fianna Fáil and. This event will be led by Tommy Graham, a history lecturer, founder and editor of History Ireland magazine. Tommy is also the founder and director of the popular Historical Walking Tours of Dublin.
