PUBLISHING NOW: AN INSIGHT INTO IRISH PUBLISHING FOR LIBRARY STAFF

An Chomhairle Leabharlanna in association with Publishing Ireland presents this half-day workshop where Irish book publishers will introduce library staff to the publishing sector’s current practices and issues and will explore ways of working together in the future.

Tony Farmar was educated in England and joined Macmillans in 1970. He became Publications Manager of the Institute of Public Administration in 1977. After a brief period with Tycooly as Editorial and Production Manager he set up A & A Farmar Book Publishers (incorporated in 1992) with Anna Farmar. Editor Clé Directory of the Irish BookWorld 1983, 1985, 1991. President of Publishing Ireland 2004-6, currently Chair of the Irish Copyright Licensing Association. Tony created and presented a series of lectures on Book Publishing for UCD 2007-9. www.aafarmar.ie

Peter O’Connell is the former director and co-founder of Liberties Press, which he started with Seán O’Keeffe in 2003.   Liberties Press has grown to become one of Ireland’s foremost non-fiction publishers with titles by Con Houlihan, Eileen Battersby, Garret FitzGerald and Lara Marlowe amongst others. Recently Liberties has begun to publish fiction titles and will   publish poetry in 2011. Peter was in charge of marketing and publicity at Liberties Press and very recently has started a new venture as a publicist and agent. www.peteroconnellmedia.com

Eoin Purcell is a publishing consultant, industry analyst and commentator. He edits Irish Publishing News and runs Green Lamp Media. He has worked as Commissioning Editor with one of Ireland’s oldest independent publishers Mercier Press and at Nonsuch Ireland (now The History Press Ireland). He writes occasional news and comment pieces on the Irish book trade for The Bookseller magazine. He lives in Dublin. www.irishpublishingnews.com

Bronwen Williams: Bronwen Williams works as a freelance arts and literature consultant. She is currently the Co-ordinator for Publishing Northern Ireland and has been Co-ordinator for the Northern Ireland Theatre Association since late 2008. She has been a Literature Adviser for Creative Scotland (formerly the Arts Council of Scotland) since 2009. In her consultancy role she has also worked with the Ballycastle Writers’ Group on their year round literature programme and festival. From 2003 to 2008 Bronwen was the Literature Specialist for the Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealeaion in Dublin and was Literature Officer for the North West region of the Arts Council of England for eight years previously. She worked as a Literature officer for the Wigan local authority area based in their libraries service and was involved in reader development work in both this role and with the Arts Council.
